Creepy Newsletter of Margo Maloo #5
~ A newsletter from cartoonist Drew Weing, the creator of the Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo series. ~
Howdy, friends. It’s sure been a long time since I wrote up a newsletter. The last time I wrote, we were still in Tucson, Arizona. Now we’re back in our lovely hometown of Athens, Georgia. Last time it was the tail-end of Covid and our kiddo Danny had just entered his first preschool. Now he’s on the edge of kindergarten. And of course, last time I was feeling more hopeful about the state of the world. Sigh.
It’s hard to even think about art while the few good parts of this country’s government get torn down around us. But we persevere.
In Margo Maloo news, I’ve done another new short story for an upcoming issue of Polle (a lovely German comics magazine for kids).
The story will be in German (and in color) in the issue, but here’s the first page in English. I’ll update when I know exactly which issue it’ll be in. Final art for Book 4 is proceeding, though things are a little up in the air with when and where the next physical volume will appear.
Late last year I was contacted by the band Fuzzy Slippers out of Philadelphia, about doing the album art for the upcoming release, Let’s Get Nervous. It was fun, and I listened to the album on repeat while drawing all these critters. You can check it out at their Bandcamp, or the usual places.
A fun thing about having a five-year-old has been diving into his weird little enthusiasms. A year or so back he got really into Godzilla and his assorted rogues gallery. I wouldn’t have said I wasn’t a Godzilla fan, but I certainly didn’t expect to have done as deep a dive as we have over the last year. Last October this manifested in a series of kaiju drawings I did last October. I got Danny to give me a few facts about each monster, and collected everything into a big zine for this year’s Fluke fest down in Athens. I’m not selling it online right now, but if you happen to be at Heroescon this year, swing by the table.
As a little bonus, here’s Danny as his own original giant monster creation, “Bone-Argh” wreaking havoc on a little city.
I really do intend to be better about keeping up the newsletter going forward, though I’m seriously considering moving platforms. We’ll see.
